fan shroud delete

After working on the truck this weekend, I just couldn't justify keeping the fan shroud intact. I removed the rear shield that covers the pulleys but I kept the front half of the actual radiator shroud in place.

Any reason I need to replace this thing? Did I miss something?

Fan shrouds help direct air over certain sections of the engine for a reason, and possibly to deflect water if it were to spray back on the engine. These shrouds are a little aggravating but I would leave it like ford designed it.

IMO they are definitely important. Replace it. May not affect things this time of year but just wait for summer.

I understand the importance of the shroud around the fan, but I just don't see how the rear shield is helping anything. It's only directing hot air around the front of the block rather than across it.

Does any other vehicle run this type of shield?

With this shield in place, reaching the belt/pulleys is waaay more aggravating than it needs to be. I actually found a loose idler pulley that was hiding back there. I would have never seen it with the shield in place.

Replacing the A/C clutch was the main reason for removing it. I don't have a single tool that will release my belt tensioner with the shield in place. The clutch was very aggravating to reach with the shield in place. Without the shield, it's too easy.

Think of it this way. Ford didn't pay the extra money to put it there because they had too much money. Your truck. If you want to second guess it, your perogative.

I promise that I tried to look at it like that, but it just didnt click. I guess it's the same reasoning that makes us add coolant filters, P/S filters, and tuners even though the engineers didn't include them.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have a Nissan 300ZX and a new Volvo S60 and both of them have a ton of decorative engine covering with "turbo" and all that on it. However, I'd leave the shroud where it is. A decorative cover is one thing but a boring black shroud probably has a purpose.

Your trying to use reverse logic there. I agree they tried to save money there. The point is they spent extra money. Think about it.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the most efficient user of logic, I'm going to have to think this one over.........

I would replace it. The schroud is a part of the strategy in the cooling system. I am curious what your operating temperature changes are running without it.

I've had mine removed for 12K miles towing in Summer heat, no issues. I still have it hanging on my wall with a clock in the center. I sat and looked at it off the truck and came to one conclusion, it's for noise. My buddy is a wrench at UPS, their 6.0 trucks don't have it.

All it does is diffuse the air in a radial pattern around the fan, reducing fan noise. It takes air traveling straight and diverts it 90 degrees out from the blade tip, I don't see how that is more efficient. Anyway, my feeling was if I had problems, I'd put it back on. The engine is still cooling great, and the fan stator keeps perfect time on my wall...............I think I found the stator's true calling!

Yeah, but they WOULD spend money to keep it QUIET, yuppies don't like NOISY Engines! People don't buy things for the strangest reasons.........
ever wonder why the 6.4's and new 6.7's are whisper QUIET?

I'm in the minority...........I don't mind that my engine sounds like the hammers of HELL, and I like that Fan howling when it kicks in like a pissed off school bus!

There are many guys on this forum and others running their trucks without a stator for many trouble-free miles.

Having said that, I leave mine on and reinstall it whenever it is removed because I'm still under warranty.
