So I think I need a rebuild or new tranny.. Sounds fine in park put it in gear and makes a loud whining noise.. I went to change the filter and fluid and found metal shavings in the pan..
How did the fluid look and smell? There is always going to be some debris in the bottom of any pan. If the transmission worked fine, you may be able to get away with just changing the torque converter and flushing the cooler and the lines going to and from the transmission. If the vehicle is in gear but not moving, the converter is the only thing with parts that are moving to make noise.
A lot of years of experience. If the whine increases with the trans speed while accelerating it is usually the front pump and as it is wearing it's internal parts, it is sending debris throughout the transmission.
You might want to start a thread in the deriveline forum as there will probably be a transmission rebuilder there that is more of an expert on transmissions than I. I don't build them but I have sold a lot of them at AAMCO and elsewhere.
