well im fully comitted. the guys in white coats got me. im puttin a standard in for sure. in my quest for the zf 5 speed ive come across 10 speed roadrangers and some old 8 speed mack trannies at or even sometimes less than what the 5 speed is going for. im all about gearing and in my opinion the more gears the better. i cant find any information about the 7.3 bellhousing and transmission options. so i need the help of all the true blue gear grabbers and the diesel tech types to guide me. im hoping someone can tell me wat will bolt up, what i can modify, and what i can double. i have a np435 from a 70 truck and a big block zf 5. i know u can make the bb zf fit but how safe and reliable is it, can i use a single mass fly wheel or is it a must for the dual mass. the skys the limit and my backs strong.im toying with puttin the np435 behind the 5 speed and im not gonna consider an automatic unless we r talkin an allison and custom flex plate.
The 6,8, 10, 13,15,18 speed trannys will have a lot of problems to overcome, 1 3/4 or 2 inch input shaft, pull type double clutch, bellhousing has to have the motor mounts on it, then the heavier truck forward mount for the engine. Any of these will require more horsepower just to turn the gears. For all but the six spd you will have to have air to shift.
If the 435 from a 70's truck is ford, it will bolt up to the 6.9 bell, clutch and pressure plate, I have a tranny out of a 66 in one of mine, you will have a lot lower granny and reverse, but bigger splits between gears than a diesel T19.
There have been several drilled the gas ZF5 to the diesel pattern, this is something I'm not interested in, as I have broken two diesel bells myself and seen several more, in all fairness these rigs were nowhere babied though.
You don't need a custom flexplate for the allisons. These motors came from the factory with allisons, they had the mount setup like big trucks though and were not overdrive.
I have a 7.3 w the E40D and would like a manual or a more dependable replacement. Is the zf5 the only logical ans besides an older 4spd(the T19?) or a aftermarket auto.
i forgot about the need for air. and ive already tore the center out of one flexplate. would any one happen to know who sells a 6.9 bell housing for the 4 speed. i tried ford but they said they cant get it and i tried summit. any help is help.
the 7.3 was used in medium duty international trucks, and i had one once with a 13 speed.
so you should be able to find a split range trans for a 7.3 if you look hard enough.
well im kinda depressed knowing i coulda got a 13 speed. i just bought a t19. $100 and i got the 6.9 T19 w bellhousing, a tranny e brake from a zf 5, driveshaft w carrier bearing, clutch fork, and a single mass flywheel from a 6.9. owell im gonna double up with my np435 for the one off and extra low gears. (and im over using my smiles).
Ok... So I am real interested in what your doing here. I've got a '91 7.3 3/4ton w an auto. (I'm repedative). At this time it's kinda a goffer truck but soon it'll be my work truck. I want it to be a manual for reliability, greater control during hauling, and just prefferance.
I like the idea of a 13spd as the gearing is 3:55 and I want to keep the interstate rpms low.
I assume your doubling the transfer cases for towing gears?
A 13 0ver is going to be real close to the same high gear ratio as a zf5,some thirteen spd are the same as aT19 or and straight tranny, you just have more gears getting their. I personally have not seen a thirteen behind a 6.9, but I do know the parts are out there to do it. Even the little mickey mouse 13 they used to put behing the 466's had a double pull type clutch and had to have air, which would be a pain to hook the clutch up in a pickup.
Using a t19 behind a t19 is still going to give you the same top gear. It would be way easier to find a three or four speed auxillary.
more power to ya if u can find an auxilary, i know here in PA its like trying to find an honest politician and when u find one it needs a rebuild. id like to find an under/direct/over setup. my next question: is it safe to run the 6.9 single mass behind the 7.3? i know it bolts up but ive found some people whove done it without a problem and others that almost lost there feet when the flywheel went through the dash. in both cases all i can be told for certain is that they were single mass not wat engine they came off. i know the 460 is very similar. i have both a 6.9 and a 460, should i find the dualmass or is there someone whos actually performed this successfully? also need a clutch, any brand preferences?
Ford recommends that if you use a 6.9 single mass on a 7.3 that you use the harmonic balancer too. I used one for several years and around 150,000 miles before I read this, so take this info for what it is worth. I have owned and been around these since ford came out with them and have never seen or even heard of a single mass flywheel coming off.
Financially it's probably out of my range, but what about a zf6 on a '91 7.3? i think a t19 or a dimond in the rough zf5 is what I'm shooting for but the more options the better
