Wow you guys are on it! I was originally going to try a Cummins swap in the F350 (Crewcab 4X4) and was told that the 3.55's were ideal. I am learning about idi's and was not sure what the best RPM range was.

The donor is a perfectly good 94 F-Superduty 7.3 idi turbo ZF5 flat bed that I picked to use and eventually swap the motor supposed to be a Ford rebuilt motor and trans with 80-100k on them.

I am not really hung up on 35" tires thats just what has worked well for me in the past.
I am at the point where I have been gathering so many parts and stuff but have little to no time to even start to turn a wrench on this thing let alone finish it. The idea came to me this morning....sell the whole shooting match and buy a tow rig, UHG! No idea what to do.

I'll add in that it depends on what you tow, as in how much and how often. I don't know quite what the larger tires will do, as i'm running 265/75's which are about the same as stock height, just wider. I have 3.55 gears and when empty, it runs nicely on the highway as fast as I want, and decent mileage. Lately I've been towing around a portable climbing wall here and there a couple weekends a month. Best I can figure the wall weighs about 4,000 lbs. Its not bad moving around town, gets up to speed pretty easily. Takes a little longer to hit highways speed, but again not a problem. It does get a little sluggish on hills though. I think I need to work on my intake or exhaust a bit as the turbo isn't giving me all its got (maybe could turn up the fuel some too?).

Depending on your needs, its fairly easy to swap out axles at a later time. So you might try it and see how it fits your needs, then swap out for some 4.10's You can probably at least find a rear axle for cheap. Or buy new gears.

Probably going to pull a toyhauler 7-9K so I agree with 4.10's.

Post on Craigslist that you're looking to swap axles.

I did it a couple of months ago and had two calls in the first couple of days, and had a guy drop his truck off within the week. I took my time and did the swap after work for a week or so, and now have a nice set of year old rebuilt 4.10 axles with Warn hubs under my truck now.

Folks are out there looking to trade, just have to find them.

The wind load on a toy hauler takes more power than the weight.
What percentage of the miles you are going to drive the truck, is going to be pulling the toy hauler. In other words if you are going to be driving the truck everyday, and pulling your toy 8 or ten times a year, you may not want to drop them gears.

I will agree though, that trading 3.55's for 4.10's is very doable.

Not a daily driver, tow duty only. I would rather go with stockish sized tires than swap axles at this point. I really have little to no time on my hands to try to swap axles with someone so I would rather try to get the physical swap done ASAP, meaning out with the 460 and T-19 and in with the 7.3/ZF then when I get some time here and there tie up the odds and ends.

I plan on swapping pretty much everything from the 94 engine compartment into the 86. I have heard that the dash, column, complete harness and everything else will swap over from the 94 into the 86.

Anyone know of a socal diesel shop that would be interested in doing the major part of the swap ? The yard where I am keeping it is tightening up on working on trucks and I am sure the property manager will freak if I take 3 months to do an engine swap.

I know nothing about any shop in your area, but coming from a former shop owner, I suspect it will be hard to get one too interested in this swap. I also think paying shop time will cost you more than a pickup ready for use will.

I'm confused.....why not just use the '94 as it is? What are you gaining by swapping the guts into the '86? Being California, can't see it being that one is rusted out or some of the other issues that a swap is done for.

Cali has a bunch of weird laws on motor swapping, I would check into too.

Laws are not an issue 86 offered a diesel option, I am swapping same year or newer, no problem. Despite the internet rumors CA engine change laws are not that strict, even easier for diesel.

The 94 is a 2wd F-superduty flat bed, I need 4x4 crewcab, wont work for what I want.

Starmilt, you are correct about costs and I feel in over my head before I even start and am looking for a turn key tow rig now. I forget I am not young and ambitious about vehicles anymore. I need to be smart and not start something that I wont finish like many in the past. I have done my share of 460 swaps and what not but just don't have it in me to "build" a truck anymore.

I appreciate all of your input, everyone here has something to contribute and really did help me lean towords not swapping, it will just be too much right now.

Anyone interested in my collection?
