Had to use 4 wheel drive this weekend and tranfercase would not shift into 4 lo. It's and 98 with the 2wd, awd,4hi and 4lo selecter switch. Seem to shift into 4hi fine couple of times it shifted from awd to 4 hi by itself. Any ideas? Thanks!
Did you follow the procedure for going into 4L? If you didn't follow it correctly it will not go in. Stop, put the trans in N, then turn the dial, then back into gear. Also on the "switching by itself", you have A4WD (Automatic 4WD) which is different than AWD (All WD). What you thought was switching by itself was just the A4WD telling you it was kicking in. When the light was on, you were in 4WD. When the light wasn't on, you were in 2WD with the automatic system monitoring for wheel slip.

Don't you also have to have the brake pedal depressed turning the selector to 4Lo? (Kinda hard to offer help when we don't know what vehicle we are discussing )

In his first post he said it's a 98. Both the Navigator and Expedition have the same 4WD setup in that year. FWIW, his profile says it's an Expedition.

I kinda of assumed that if he was stopped he would have his foot on the brake. My bad.
OP - Put your foot on the brake while in N when you switch in and out of 4L.
