390fe stumped!
hey out there, got a stumper on my hands! Just re assembled a 73 390 fe. I was very careful and double checked everything as i went. Little back ground on it. all sufaced and decked. pistons are clevite moly's .060 . Comp r.v. cam. Heads redone with hard seats.everything new. edelbrock intake/600cfm carb, m.s.d. ready to run ignition(no box) P.r.w. stainless roller rockers. Sooo..... Got it in fired it up and she runs strong except smokes. Starts clean for a few minutes then gradually smokes more and more. Plus... Water droplets start coming out of the exhaust, not just condensation. Smoke is blue/white ... oil right? Checked plugs no oil fouling. Checked compression 170 lbson all except number one 160lbs. I can see oil residue on the tops of the pistons sitting on the lip of the valve dent. Not losing coolant that I can tell. Oil is clean. I installed oil flow restrictors and fuel pressure regulator. I keep coming back to the head gasket and or a bad oil ring, any Ideas? I sooooooo don't want to tear it back down.. OUT

do you have the manual fuel pump still on or an electric fuel pump?...if your getting too much gas it can wash the cylinder's and cause you to burn oil after a certain amount of time...or maybe your carb is too rich...some thoughts

What are you running for an oil pump, high volume pump? are your exhaust pipes just wet, or oily too? you may need to go with smaller restrictors in the heads, run the motor with rocker covers off, see how much oil is being pumped out onto the valve train, at idle it should not be running out over the lower sides of the heads.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

smoking exhaust
Sir, Some years ago we replaced an engine in a car that was using oil, after starting it up it would smoke like you are describing, turned out that the mufflers were packed with carbon and oil,they must have weighed twice their normal weight. I know this sounds crazy but it had us stumpted for a while.Kenny Nunez
