I dont know if this is the right place for this or not, but the truck is a 89 F250. I got it with a 4 speed trans and a carbed 460. The stock auto trans dash is in there still and the PO wired up a new keyed ignition. He used the coil from the 89. Instead of the plug that usually goes in the coil there are now two wires attached to the male prongs in teh coil. On the left hand side, the wire goes to 12v switched power. The right hand wire i am not sure where it goes, but where should it be hooked to? Is it a ground or is it supposed to go to the distributor? Ill post up some pictures tomorrow and answer any questions to the best of my knowlege. I just got the truck for $500 and would like to see if i can get the motor to run before i scrap it.
It has a mallory distributor in it. Not sure if there is a control box or not (MSD duraspark, etc). I will look tomorrow.
It is REALLY hard to say what the P.O. did to make it work.
The other wire from the coil should ground THROUGH whatever he is using to trigger the ignition.
A pre-88- carbureted- 351 HO should have DSII setup, but you say he is using the '89 coil.
Does it have the DSII or the TFI Distributor? (edit; well that's embarrassing , I should read more thoroughly)
If TFI, it is probably the grey module on the side.
I would go to mallory's website and look up the wiring they have for that distributor if it can be a stand alone ignition.
I parted out an 86 bronco (with duraspark) but the wiring was chewed up from 10 years of mice and rabbits. I hooked up a gm 4 pin module with some new wires to the dizzy, coil, and battery and fired it up.
also take a closer look at the coil, most have a +(ignition positive) and a -(signal) side. it also makes it easier for us to understand what wire is going where. turning the coil around changes which is on the left or right.
on edit, I had a mallory dizzy once that came with a 302 that was an optical trigger (3 wires: bat, ground, signal) and it could be used as a stand alone unit.
I got a couple pictures to put up but I'll have to wait until I get home. If you are looking at the stock location for the coil on a 89-96 fseries truck, the left prong is hooked to a wire that goes to a post on the distributor. The right wire goes into the cab for 12v switched power. I see no power distribution box for it. There is also the small cylinder shaped item with a single wire that is usually attached to the stock coil bracket, on the side of the distributor. That wire is also hooked to the same post the wire coming from the coil is.
The distributor is a vacuum Advanced unit so no TFI. does this sound like it's hooked up right? Like I said I'll post pictures when I get home to clarify
Looking up the part number 2756701h online it says that the dist is in fact a points dist. Now, i have no clue what this changes, if anything. How should it be wired?
The points should have two screws.
One is a pivot and the other one fixes it in place.
You will find a little notch in the tip of the point's base and a "tit" on the base plate where you can pry them back and forth with a flathead screwdriver to adjust the gap.
