I have a 77 f-250 hy boy. It has a 351m in it with a 4 speed manual. The 351m has a sticking valve but I was wandering if I'm gonna go through the trouble, will a 460 mate up to the transmission of the 351m?
Yes the 351m bellhousing will mate to the 460...however the 351m bellhousing is about 3/8'' shallower than the 460 bellhousing. You have to make up some space inbetween the bellhousing and motor block. I put a 460 in my 70 highboy and i cut out a piece that went inbetween the block and bell that was 5/16'' thick along with the factory spacer plate that was about 1/8'' thick so it was a total of 7/16'' thickness in between the block and bell. You may also have to get different motor mounts (not sure) check landlproducts.com for motor mounts.
Thanks for the info. This is the first hy boy I've begun. Mostly f150 4X4's. I've always wanted one and now I'm gonna do it right. I guess now I'll start with a crate motor(460 that is!)
Ok ive been told there is not a spacer, and then again i am told there is a spacer between the bellhousing and engine block with the 351m to 460 swap, WHAT IS THE CORRECT ANWSER? i posted about this and they keep telling me there is no spacer... then reading now again on teh forum and WHAM there is a spacer needed mentioned again. maybe we need a article on this swap in the tech section to clear it up once and for all.
there is a plate that goes between the engine and bellhousing, not realy considered a specer. i used 2 of them when i installed my 460. i also had a pilot bearing machined to fit deeper in the crank to accomidate the smoothe end of the tranny.
