Well, this new to me truck has taken me about 1000 miles so far. Now It's time to get dirty for the next 1000. The fuel tank(s) leak like a sieve, parking brakes are shot and the transmission just bit the dust. I recently changed the filter and cleaned the pan. It didn't help much
Now it sounds like a cinder block rolling around in there, whole truck shudders even in neutral. Not really sure what to do at this point. I've been reading the threads and have definitely ruled out a ZF5 swap (unless I could score all the parts for under 3-400 bucks). I know I need to pull the bed to inspect the tanks, also need to pull the wheels and hubs to inspect brakes, etc.. I have never pulled a tranny, is this a doable job for a shade tree, second class, with half the tools he needs ? I can get a tranny jack.
I plan on pulling the C6, looking it over to see if there is anything I can do for it. If not, start looking for a rebuilder or replacer. No, I'm not going to rebuild it, unless there is something I can check while it's on the truck or the bench. Any ideas on a manual, which one, where to get ?
I have learned a lot more about these trucks than I ever thought I needed to. The reality is, if we don't learn about them they will become dinosaurs. The "professional" mechanics are too busy keeping up with the latest technology.
Pulling the trans yourself is definitely within the shade tree mechanic ability. Once removed from the truck, take to a good local shop to get rebuilt. C6 is a good trans that was quite popular before the OD trans came out, so you should be able to find a shop that can rebuild it. Talk to the shop about adding some improvements during the process.
Lazy K, thanks for the link. I read it and it does sound do-able. Having worked on 7 cylinder Sulzer diesels that are two stories tall, I guess I can do this.
You guys are great ! I'll be much happier knowing that transmission is getting fixed.
