The ticking was replace with the sound of something bouncing around under the valve cover. I stopped the engine and pulled off the cover. underneath I found some hard pieces of plastic. I'm thinking it is an old brittle valve seal.
I've searched and have found replacements pretty cheap but always seem attached to a rebuilding of the head. Is it possible to replace these guys without removing the head?
it is possible to change them without pulling the head. You will need a valve spring compressor similar to this one Lisle 16750 Valve Spring Compressor. an air compressor and an adapter to put air through the spark plug hold. some compression testers have come apart and that works. bring the cylinder to the top of the compression stroke put air to the cylinder. This will hold the valve up when you are working on it. Use the compressor pull the keeper and spring replace the seal. good luck
