its a late 1999 F250 SD 4x4 7.3L i bought it a couple months ago and have been loving it. the 4x4 worked when i bought it cause i tested it and used it a couple of times. the previous owner had manual locking hubs put on.
well now the 4x4 seemed to stop working.
i have the truck running with it in neutral and i get out and lock the hubs, now the passenger side hub makes the click noise when it hits the lock position, on the other side (driver side) it does not make the click sound when it hits the lock postion like it once did when i got the truck. then ill get back in the truck turn the switch to 4x4Hi, wait for the 4x4 light to come on the dash then put the truck in gear. well... the front tires dont spin, the drive shaft spins when in 4x4 but the tires do not and i know this because i put the entire truck on jack stands and tested it. idk what it could be exactly. im about to take a trip outta state to go hunting and i know im going to need my 4x4 so i wanna find out whats wrong and roughly how much it will cost me.. please help. and im tired of my buddies doggin on my ford lol!!!
Using a pry bar or something similar, with the wheels on the ground, hubs locked and transfer case in 2WD, see if the front axle u-joint right behind the wheel hub will turn. If it will, then the hub lock is not engaged.
okay ill go try that right now..
my friend told me that if one is locked and not the other the one that is locked will still spin and the tire will spin.. is that true?
okay i did what you said. i locked the hubs and had it in 2wd and the driver side axle U joint spun which also spun the front driveshaft...the passenger side would not spin...
so what does that mean?
would that cause the 4x4 not to work at all?
and what do i need to replace exactly?
If the driver side u-joint spun with the wheel on the ground then the hub lock was not locked. Either because the dial isn't in the lock position or because it's broken.
I'm going to assume you had it in the lock position, which leaves a broken hub lock. I'd pull it out and see what it looks like inside.
Around the outside of the hub lock is a snap ring. Find the two tabs sticking out, grab them with pliers, squeeze them together and the snap ring should come out. Then the hub should come out. It might not come out easily. You can tap around it with a hammer and work it out.
we took off the hub locker and it all looked fine so we just placed the cap back on and tried it again and it locked in!! so idk what was the deal i guess just that spring or somthing was out of line by a hair. but the 4x4 works now. but when i went to put it on 4x4 low it was clicking in and out and you could hear it under the truck so idk what that could be but the 4x4 hi worked fine.
