81 ford question

Hey guys
I just bought a 81 f150 body that was set onto a 79 f250 running gear the motor is a fresh built 400 punched 30 over mild cam and edelbrock high rise with a 850 double pumper trans has a shift kit and mild stahl converter. My question is the speedo doesn not work will I need the speedo assembly for a 79 or the speedo assy for a 81? Are they the same? I'm hopingto get all these small things worked out because the entire body has been redone and it runs sweet. I hope I didn't. Bite off more than I can chew with this truck. Thanks for any help you can give.

I extracted this post from the "What have you done today" thread and created its own thread.

BTW I'd imagine you'd need an 80-86 speedometer head as I believe the 70s are of a different size.

You should do some investigation and see if the cable is hooked up, etc.

The entire cable is missing from the dash to the transfer case. That is why I'm baffled

Chris is right, you'll need the speedo from an 80 - 86 truck as the earlier one won't fit into the dash on the 81. However, there are some differences in those units and I don't remember what they are, although you can find that by searching on this forum. You'll need one that is compatible with your 81 wiring - assuming you are using the stock wiring.

I have a few of the instrument panels awa a complete cable set, I think, although it is for a truck with cruise so is actually two cables with the transducer. If interested shoot me a PM.

If he's got the instrument panel, all he really needs is the cable and housing. Wrecking yard trip...

The 1979 engine / tranny / rear end / will bolt onto a 1981 frame. Unless they just put the body of the 1981 on the 1979 frame. If so we need to know if they kept the 1979 wiring or not or spliced.

Yep, that's what I was trying to say, although you did it better than I.
