Alright so some of you saw my last thread about my tone ring being shot in the rear end of my new truck, I discovered this during the search for my bouncing speedo problem: That is what i found pulling the rear cover off...not a good feeling, but in that situation since i had a manual and that ring does nothing but control the speedo and abs... I decided to cut it off in place to get me back on the road since this is my daily driver now, if you have an auto you may not wanna do this as it will effect your shifting points. After i got my new ring from: https://www.ringpinion.com/DiffWizard.aspx I started the removal of the main gear by pulling the axles, very easy to do i just pulled the 8 bolts and slid them out about 6" well i continued working, you will need a new o-ring which the link above does have for your outer axle, if your local ford dealer is anything like mine they will tell you that o-ring does not exists. So I went to a local hydraulic shop and paid 2 bucks for the 2 o-rings i needed instead of the 4 or 5 a piece they want from the link above. Once your axles are pulled and you have pulled the cover and drained the fluid it's times to pull the 4 bolts that hold the main gear housing into place: Be sure to mark the top or bottom and put them back on the correct side as they are machined for the position they are in! Once your main gear is out which may require some prying.. If needed be sure to use a block of wood or something between your pry bar and differential housing as not to dent or ding the the surface, In my case i did not need to pry the gear came right out for me, Note it is heavier then i thought so be ready, Also note the spacers that will come out with it make sure to put them back on the correct side. Now that your gears are out do a good overall inspect if whats going on in there. In my case it was not very good as i have a couple chips missing on my pinion, my main gear is okay but whoever owned this in the past had a serious problem and did not fix it correctly. after you have looked around and found your problems like me or you have found nothing wrong, which i hope is what you all find It is time to put the new abs tone ring on. In my case i did not need to tap the other one off because as you remember i cut it off in place at a previous date, but if you are removing your old ring follow this:1996 Bronco/F-Series Thanks to Darin/427 fordman for giving me that link. Be sure to note how the ring is situated on the housing as the ring has a slight bevel to the inside of it to space it slightly off the main gear.I would put the main gear back on before installing the new ring. torque on those bolts are 100-120 lbs. Now you are ready to install your new abs tone ring. Instead of tapping on it like a caveman trying not to damage it as you put it on just pop it in the oven at 225 or 250 for about 20 minutes, then run it out to your gear housing and drop it on, it doesn't get any easier then that!! Now you are ready to reinstall!!! this link provides the torque specs for all you need, thanks to Darin againhttp://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/ring_and_pinions/ford_10.25_ring_and_pinion_gears.html. Your outer axle bolts are 60 to 70 lbs. Also just to say the obvious this did fix my bouncing speedo problem!
Thanks guys! i just wanted to get something out there on this process. I couldn't find much online or any real write up on this forum..Still shocked about that... FTE has helped me so many times I hope this helps someone in the future!!
