alternators seem to be a hot topic today....mine quit....and as you might have guessed i am a fireman, i got a full sized strobe light bar on top, strobes in head and tail lights, flashers in back up lights, vhf, 800mhz idac, cb radios, not to mention cd player with 500 watt amp....the stock alt never really did a great charging job...how hard is it to change to the ambulance alternator....i see they are all internal regulated...so is it just one wire to the batt?
A G3 alt conversion would be perfect for your application, as they charge way more at an idle, and that is what you need. If you do a search here there are detailed pictures explaining everything you need to do.

I just searched under "3g conversion" and other associated permutations but nothing is coming up. Can you provide a link to this pictured explanation?

The search function on this site sucks. Try google... you'll most likely get a few threads from this forum that didnt show up when searching the same words here. I think there's a sticky about it in the 80-86 forum on this site if you wanta check there.
