smoke

Just a question. I started up my truck today letting it warm up before hooking up my trailer, and I noticed smoke coming out the exhaust while idleing. Is this normal for the 7.3's? It wasn't a lot but enough to catch my eye. I also have black soot around the tail pipe.

What color smoke? Smoke on idle is not normal. But if its cold you might not be seeing smoke but just seeing the exhaust. Soot build up is normal.

White smoke - Something in the cylinder that shouldnt be (coolant, oil, unburned fuel)
Black smoke - excess fuel for the amount of oxygen in the cylinder, commonly called "running rich".

This is what it does when I start it up. It usually smokes for around a minute then clears up. What do you think?

If it blows white smoke like that when you start it cold its normal, the cylinders are cold and it should clear up almost right away. If you had an AIH Delete and it was below freezing you wouldnt believe the amount of white smoke it will pour out the exhaust until it warms up. You dont have anythig to worry about

It was about 60 degrees out today and the truck was cold. Thanks for the reply.

Could just be a bad glo plug on one cylinder and while warming up the air in that cylinder isn't as warm and is not burning the fuel as efficiently as the rest. Something to try would be testing your injectors! Problem may worsen in colder weather. All in all not that unusual.

or it can be water in the exhaust pipe that condensed.

I said injectors but it should of been glo plugs. Fairly easy! All it takes is an ohm meter.
