2wd to 4wd conversion.
I will be moving to Colarado next spring, my 93 x-cab, is a 2wd. I have done the 2wd truck in the snow thing before, and it is not fun. I am thinking about doing a 4wd conversion on her by finding a doner truck and swaping out the drivetrains. So here are a handfull of questions that I have for the collective. My truck is a 93 x-cab xlt 2wd with an e40d. What model years are most compatible for a conversion? Are there drivetrain differences between gassers and diesels? Should I look for an F350 to get the Dana 60 front axle, and if so is it a more complicated swap out? I plan to rebuild all the components before the changeout, would I be wise to do a disc brake conversion on the rear axle while I have it accessable, and if so, how does that work with the ABS? I know that I will have some driveshaft issues if the trans are different what else should I expect? I have spoken to OREO about this a little (BTW where has he been, hope all is well), any and all info is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mac.
My personal opinion, after doing a 4wd swap on my truck... Find yourself the 4wd you want and just buy it. Its a pain in the *** to do!!! The front suspension is different and it does NOT just bolt on. So don't think its as easy as swapping things over. The amount of work is only worth it if you're super attached to your truck and have plenty of money and time to put into it.

id just sell, rebuy, trade etc too, unless it was a truck like an F-superduty (pre f450) that didn't come in the 4wd configuration and couldn't already find one of the rare conversions done by the pro co's back in the day.
i guess if ya love the truck, but it's not like these trucks are hard to come by.it's probably more cost effective to just sell and rebuy anyway.i suppose that all depends on the time one has,the tools accessible,if you find a cost effective donor etc.etc.etc.for the most part though,i doubt its a saving proposition lol.
Maybe what I'll do is find a solid 4wd x-cab, and do a motor/trans swap. I have done that before. I know what I am getting into. My interior is pretty solid, but that is easy to change out also. The main reason I wanted to do my truck is so I could go through the axles and suspension while they were off the truck, but i can r&r them while the truck is sitting. What about the front axles? I know that a lot of guys swap out the dana 60 on their F250s'. I don't plan to do a lot of off-roading, primarily I want 4wd for the Colorado winters, and the occasional slimey boat ramp! I want to stick with a x-cab as opposed to a crew, and even though it can be a PITA trans, I am sticking with the e40d. I haven't seen many 4wd x-cab autos out here in Cali, but at least if I can find one here, I won't have to worry about rust issues. I have some time to look. If I find one with a zf5, is it possible to swap out a auto trans? I know most guys do exactly the opposite. What about wiring? Aren't there are a lot more electronics involved in the auto trans config? I will be swapping out both motor and trans. Can I use a gasser?
A lot of questions I know, but like my sig. says none of us knows more than all of us. Knowledge is power!
Thanks,
Mac.
If you are determined to use your motor or part of your truck, the simplest would be find a 4X4 set up like you want with a bad motor. You can swap a ZF5 over to an auto, but it has to be an auto for a 4X4.
You would basically be selling your existing truck for just a motor.
