going to take off from a light last night at 10 pm with my lil girl, pressed the go pedal and nothing. looked under the truck and the drive shaft was just spinning. rear end went out, maybe broke a pinion.had to wait on the side of the road with a tired 2 and a half year old waiting on a tow truck. ill swap out the rearend this weekend and open up the old one to see what broke.
yup. with 4 wheel drive, if the back end goes out, just pull the rear shaft and throw it in 4 wheel.
i drove my 66 W-300 in front wheel drive for 7 months many many years ago. the rear dana 80 self detonated and it took me 7 months to find another one for the parts to put it back together
goop.... Now you have me worried George. I was pushing hard (my first mistake, should have pulled) to get the 5er on blocks to level it and the rear end made a real loud clunk, grinding noice. Its been running fine but I didn't like what I heard at all.
after i got it apart, i could see that the wheel bearings went out first and allowed the axel to flex. the truck had been feeling a lil funny, but i didnt pay any attention to it because i had just finished the front end swap and had not aligned it yet. it tore up the housing and i had to swap in a single wheel axel from the wrecked truck. i got lucky it was here
You guys are right. Most of the time I can handle my break downs but its nice to be offered help. I've got to tell this story, eight years ago we went to Alaska and on the way back on a Sunday I had two flats ten miles apart. We were on the freeway and a couple from California stoped and offered their help. We just said thanks, we will just have to wait until tomorrow to get some tires. "Jump in, we will take you to Walmart, you can sleep in our camper with us". Talk about nice people, I still think about them, took them out to dinner but that's not enough payment really!! (didn't have the PSD then)
I don't care that the cops didn't stop( didn't wNt to deal with them anyway) but one could have sat with his lights on because people kept pulling up behind me and I was worried about my daughter. I bet if I had sat on the tailgate with a beer, 10 woulda showed up.
