Transmission problems!
Hey guys. My 93 F150 4.9 M5OD is having some issues. When I go to put it in gear it grinds, and wont go in. I check the fluid in it and there is fluid. Even on the highway if i do get it to go it comes out the odd time when i let off the gas. Can anyone tell me what it is?
Sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging. First thing to do is check the fluid level in the master cylinder resevoir. If low top it up with Dot3 brake fluid, pump the pedal and check for any signs of a fluid leak.

If the clutch was worn out you would have the opposite problem.
It would not be driving the transmission.
You would smell the friction material burning.
If it pops out of gear on trailing throttle and has a problem going into gear I would think the syncro's in the gearbox are bad.
Either that or the shift forks are worn or bent.
Dragging and not getting it fully into gear.

So im almost better off getting another tranny. I figured it was the tranny itself. But is it common for everygear synchro to go bad? seems like a big job to replace the synchros

You could still have a clutch release problem.
I just don't see that causing it to pop out of gear once you do get it in.
Is this something that's been getting worse, or did it happen all of the sudden?

There area lot of clutch issues with these trucks.
First and foremost is the little plastic clip that holds the clutch pedal belcrank to the master cylinder pushrod.
Cheap and easy repair. (if the pin isn't worn)
You can get the retainer clip in the Dorman HELP! section of your local autoparts store.
Second is the firewall flexing and tearing around where the master cylinder mounts.
There are reinforcement kits for this.
Third would be the bushings in the pedal support. (cast aluminum piece, up under the dash) wearing out.
And even the holes in the metal support itself becoming oval.
Then,of course there's the obvious... failing master or slave cylinders.

look up under the dash and move the clutch pedal and follow the linkage. theres the rod that goes throught the firewall. well where the rod connects to the linkage inside the truck there is a plastic bushing. i had to replace the little lever on the end ad the pin was worn out.
