Posted this in the 87-96 forum...but it concerns this forum also and more than likely someone in here would have done this before. I have an 89 f150, 300, 5spd, 2wd, LWB. Runs great...got it for 1000 dollars. Wishing I would have gone with 4WD and LOVE the 80-86 bodies. My 89 body has a rusted out floor pan. So I'm wanting to find an 80-86 4WD with a blown motor to drop my 300 into along with the computer. What obstacles am I going to run into with this setup? If I find one with an auto (aod) it doesn't have electronic control right? So I could still run my computer with my 300/5spd setup? Will my engine perches bolt into the 80-86 frame? I see ALOT of 302/351 80-86 trucks but would want my 300 used. What if anything will I run into and what will not bolt up? Thanks alot guys!
Sure it's possibly. Let me get this straight you want to find a whole 80-86 truck and use that instead? Just swapping your engine into it? That wouldn't be a problem. None of the 80-86 transmissions will be electronically controlled. If you find one with a V8 you'll likely have to change the engine perches on the frame. I just swapped an EFI 4.9 into my '86 so I can tell you it's certainly possibly. Just time consuming. Also why are you giving up on the 89 so quickly? It seems like you're just paying $1000 for a 4.9 engine...
Not giving up on the truck. Figured I would part out the 89 and hopefully pay for the 1000 dollar truck and have a free engine. Wanted to get an 80-86 4WD....my 89 is 2WD. And I love the bull nose trucks!! Should have just waited to find one. I was also wondering about putting my perches in a V8 truck...most I find are 302/351 trucks....will my 89 4.9 perches work?? Are the frames the same?? Thanks alot for you help! Been lurking for a while.
Frames are the same, the perches will work. You will have to swap the fuel system over though, since you have fuel injection. That means the tanks also.

Well. Fuel pump modules/sender. Whatever you want to call it. But if you have the whole truck you might as well use the tank.
