So i recently had my 390 rebuilt and have put 1600 miles on it. Ive been messing with this truck since i was 15 years old and started out knowing close to nothing about motors. Im about to turn 19 now and have pretty much done everything myself that has been done to the truck. I've learned alot about what parts do what and where they are located, but i do not know what can be done to improve what is stock. I had a 270 comp cam put in when the motor was built. I do not know what kind of rocker arms and lifters are on it (probably whatever kind are stock for a 390), but i was thinking about getting a set of comp cam aluminum rockers and hydraulic lifters. would this give me any significant increase in performance at all or would i spend a useless 800 bucks?
ive got a holley 650 4bbl vaccummed 2nds carb, a edelbrock 2105 midrise intake, stock manifolds, dual flowmaster 2 1/2 inch exhuast system and super 44 mufflers...ive got money there already, haha
If your engine is stock, then you won't necessary get better performance from other rockers or lifters. Do you have electronic iginition? If you have points, money would be better spent there (i.e. Pertronix).
yeah one of my friends told me today that my solid lifters and adjustable rockers are actually probably better because they can hold more valve spring tention...i definitely have been looking into the pertronix and a msd ignition box
That is cool that you have done most the work yourself. Best way to learn is by doing. I agree with the others, you will not see any improvement by switching rocker arms, and if your cam is a solid lifter grind, you don't want to put hydraulics on it.
When Heat is involved - alwasy ask the question - Hang on a second - once upon a time – a small Chevy eng was over heated – after being towed in - the problem– beside the coolant leak - it would not rev- w/ o miss fire - spark timing involved – after many hours of shop time & a dealer ship that could not cure the problem - the fix was - it took new valve springs
You should get electronic ignition. I bought Pertronix Ignitor II with matching Flame-thrower II coil. The difference was amazing. I kept the oem distributor for stock appearance.
Now is that similar to the pertronix plug n' play? thats what i was looking at getting. i need a new distributor anyways because mine is starting to get tiny hairline cracks
you mentioned stock exhaust manifolds , dump them and get headers you're losing power there for sure .
i'm not sure if a bump is like a slick, but! headers are the biggest pain in the ****..... to change out the starter?... remove the header... to remove the header? jack up the engine... to install the header? jack up the engine and remove the starter....leave header hanging while you re-install the starter....at least the drivers side goes in easy.
ok they are a pain to install and make starter replacement a pain too , but the factory logs are soooooo restrictive. you do any cam ,carb, manifold and power will suffer .
I agree, does no good to improve breathing with a stronger cam, and bigger carb, if you are going to use stock exhaust manifolds. Headers may be a pain to install, but they are well worth the effort and will really wake up an engine that has already had the bigger cam, and carb installed.
they are on my list too...see i have all these things and no money to get them lol. im not too worried about the starter problems, i just had the starter rebuilt and it lasted a long time originally so it should be in the green for a while. installing the headers will definitely suck, but i agree with yall, they will make a huge difference. i was looking at some hookers or maybe hedman..i dont want to go insane with the money. im gonna put wraps on them to extend the life of my starter even further
