Can someone tell me what a decent code scanner would be. I've been on eBay and there are quite a few on there. I guess I'm leaning toward the ones that give live data. Any recommendations?

Also, if you have a smartphone, you can pick up any bluetooth adapter and use the torque app in the market, it does a good job also and cost about 20.00. But typically I use my CTS.
AutoEnginuity looks like it needs a computer or other device to actually 'see' values. ScanGauge II displays a variety of data points in real time, and also lets you view and clear trouble codes on the fly.
Guess it depends on what data you want to see and when you want to see it. The AE system is like a Mercedes and the ScanGauge is like...well, a Ford.
I think it would be neat to hook up my laptop like our shop mechanics do for our semis. Was not looking at spending that much money. The wife would shoot me. The ones I saw on eBay were like $100. Seemed to have all the info others talk about. I really wouldn't know much about them. Thought would be good idea to get one at decent price so if I get codes in one of my 3 ford vehicles I could maybe fix myself with the help of the site and all the awesome people on it. If the expensive ones are the way I need to go then I will wait till spring and get one of those. Thanks guys. Great help as always
The $100 ones will pull the codes and show you some values.
The AE with the enhanced package will let you initiate system tests and other things they can do at the shop. The AE will let you calibrate your speedo if you need to. It will also let you open and close ABS valves to flush the old fluid out. You get the idea.
So, it really just depends on what you'll be using it for.
It would be nice to be able to do all that stuff with the AE. But would a person with no training messing in there cause havic. Can I do damage that wouldn't be able to reverse. Kinda like putting a bull in a china shop lol

Be careful. Standard OBD 2 scanners can't read diesel's. I duno what kind of engine you have, but you wanna keep that in mind.

No you can't. It's pretty user friendly and you can't really mess anything up accidentally.
