i really love these year of trucks and would like to get good gas mileage with out having to sell it so is it even possible to get 20 or above miles per gallon out of a 72 f100?
its 2wd i have a 4 speed that will fit a 302 or 351 but i know 4 speeds are fairly low geared. is a inline six my best route? my current daily driver is a 76 f100 4x4 with a 360 and 4speed but i would like to start this 72 project with one thing in mind and that is mpg.
think i could go with a new fuel injected engine and reach 20 mpg?
Hmm... your still pushin a brick through the air,,, these weren't designed with mileage or aeromatics (from Cars movie) in mind,,, although,,, I have avg. 16-17 with my 66 F250, had a 300 I6, holley 390cfm, Offenhauser 4bbl intake and Hedman headers, truck had NP435 and 4.10s and that was driving in Orange county/Riverside and about,,, keepin it around 55-62,,, so if ya drive nice, you could get close,,, and FI should help a bit,,
EFI conversions are pretty pricy, but i have read a couple "testimonials" and heard of people with BB's getting 40% fuel mileage increase. that would put 10-11 mpg (which im assuming is about what you're getting) at around 14-15 mpg...electronic ignition might help you out, along with a fuel regulator. I have a buddy with a 351w built beyond belief (close to 450 at the wheels) and he gets 15mpg with a holley fuel regulator and msd electronic ignitoin and 8,000 rpm ignition box..this stuff aint the cheapest but i believe it will pay itself off

We are gonna talk when build time comes for my 460. I am wanting 650hp at the wheels and would love to see 15mpg. I am planning EFI in finished mode.

I know these trucks are far from the best vehicle to try to get good mpg out of but just wondering if its possible. now what would be the best engine and trans combo to try an achieve this?
A potential remedy if you only use it as a daily driver or light hauling is to check the salvage yards for a fairly high geared 3rd. member to put in that rear end. Yours is likely 3.50 or lower, many cars are 3.00, 2.73, and similar.
