OK, so I've been wanting to put new Tires on my Ford for a long time. It's a 1976 Ford F150 4x4. I was originally going to get 33 x 12.50 x 15's, but my friend told me narrower tires are better for Snow (We get plenty of it up here in South Dakota) so I was thinking about 33 x 10.50 x 15's. Here are my two tire options:
33 x 10.50 x 15 -- BF Goodrich KM2's
33 x 12.50 x 15 -- Cooper STT
Which one would you prefer? I drive my truck Daily (When I'm not working on it ) I live in SD, so the truck mainly see's Rain, Snow, Ice and occasionally Mud.
Then I got to thinking, I want new wheels too. My Truck currently has the Cragar Chrome Quick Trick I Wheels. I was at the repair shop the other day and there was a late 70's Ford in there with Chrome 5 blade rims on it. They look very nice on our trucks.
I for one am not a fan of chrome wheels. It's not IF they will rust, it's WHEN will they rust? Soon more often than not. I'd go painted or powdercoated. Something like Cragar's Soft 8s in Silver or Black.
Personally, I'd opt for 33x10.5x15s on 15x8s... less rolling mass. However, the 12.5s will provide a wider footprint - a good thing in snow and mud... but how often are ya really in that stuff over a year?
Well, we're almost guarenteed 5 months out of the year in Snow. Usually starts in November and ends as early as April, sometimes even goes as late as June. So It's safe to say I need a tire that's good for Snow. I'm thinking the STT because of the Wider footprint like you mentioned. The rims on my Ford right now were chrome, and rusted badly. I'm currently cleaning them up with steel wool and a lot of patience. It's almost worth going with Black rims, but I like the chrome because it matches the Grill, Bumpers and Trim.

Your call mister. If you're willing to the upkeep then go for it. I'd rather be working on other stuff than constantly polishing/cleaning wheels.
Tread pattern also plays a significant role in traction. Have you read through any tire tests like on 4Wheel/Offroad or Four Wheeler's website?
you want a narrower foot print for mud and snow. it allows the tires to dig to solid ground and find traction unless its 2+ feet of mud or snow then you need the flotation effect to stay on top.
think military vehicles they could have any tires they want but there all narrow for the truck weight so they dig in and bite. a 12.5" wide tire on a 11,600 lb hummer is like a 6" wide tire on our trucks.
