finished it up but have no spark. tried a couple coils from the garage. tried a few modules from the garage. bought a new dizzy but still the same. motor ran good in the old truck i pulled it from. i think it's time to buy a multi-meter and run some tests. i saw an ignition system trouble shooter on here but now i can't find it. anyone have any ideas or a link to the trouble shooter? thanks
these dura sparks are the easy ones to work on.
white is the timing retard in start red is power in key on
the 3 wire plug is color coded orange purple black and they carry over to the dizzy as the same colors.
i usually opt for these over msd boxes or wire in a gm modual in place of the dura spark box if i need more reliability.
a gm conversion is the most realiable if you have to change the dura spark box out.
you need a modual off a pre 85 350 and the connectors to plug it in tight and ground it.
Connect a test light from that TACH TEST (negative) terminal of the coil to clean, unpainted metal on the engine (ground). The coil must remain connected. Crank the engine over with the key, and the light should BLINK. Report your results. If it doesn't blink, we'll go from there.
You can also do this with a multimeter, and watch for the display to flash between 12 volts and open (often reported as zero) quickly. This is easy to see on an analog multimeter, but a digital multimeter may not sample quickly enough to show this. A multimeter is a must have, but in this case I think a test light is a little easier to see. But you will need the multimeter to move forward if the light does not BLINK.
