just recently my truck has started to whine. when i start boosting it sounds as if i have a blower on it my assumption is its the turbo.maybe a bearing going bad or something.i have a spare turbo sitting in my garage so im going to be swapping it out. what am i looking at as far as the swap goes? i tried searching for how easy/difficult it is but couldnt find anything.thanks in advance
Check and see if you have a boost leak first. A boost leak will have a high pitch sound and squeal like a bearing but a stock Turbo don't have ball bearings just keep that in mind..
Does it sound like an ambulance? I've had that whine for over 7k now. I think its my baby butt to turbo connection. ??
As for swapping out a turbo. First time, five hours or so. Soak the clamps on the exhaust with your choice of lube before getting into it. It's not hard.
GR$$NE, both me and diesel-fitter been fighting this sound, but mine sounds more of a harmonic sound/vibration. Changed my turbo out last week with a freshly rebuilt one (keep in mind, i just installed the turbo, last April), and what you know, the damn noise is still there. I chaulked it up to my foil-delete mod, giving the issue, but yet to be 100% conclusive, since i dont have a foiled donor charge-side
As for swapping them out, not tough at all, just the collector band will give you some sh^% though...
ff-i did not know that about no bearings.ill have to check for a leak i suppose.thanks.diesel-fitter.i do not know what an ambulance sounds like up close.the exhaust was just off last week as i had to pull my trans to replace my flex plate so it shouldnt be too bad.it literally sounds like a small blower noise and also i still hear the turbo of course.its really weird.and thanks timmy. im just towing my 36' toyhauler to cal city in two weeks so i dont want the turbo to explode on me.i guess ill have to check all my lines and hopefully find something unplugged. and this foil delete you speak of...what does that exactly do if you dont mind asking.and benefits of it. thanks guys for all the help
ill try and check for the leaks.is soap and water a good way to tell for a leak? and i have a dp tuner but unfortunately a little too broke at the moment to have gauges.i have the pod just no gauges
Yes soap and water mix. Do you have a boost leak tester? If not some one will chime in with a link to to show how they are made.it will cost about 15/20 dollars to make it if you don't have any of the parts laying around. Does the sound sound the same in your stock tune as it does in the other tunes? If it is a boost leak it should be loader in one of the tunes cause boost is greater and you have more boost in lower RPMs. So check that and listen to see what RPMs you hear it and compare from stock to on the tuner.
no i do not have a boost leak tester. and i havnt tried.i know from my towing to my economy was less.towings only like 40hp.but ill have to check stock when i leave work
OK its a 3'' PVC cap it will slide right in the filter tube and you clamp it down. Before you do this you tap it out for a valve stem and a gauge so you can put air in and see how much is in it. The tape will cost you more than any thing the gauge is a option you don't have to have it you will just have to keep in mind not to put a lot of air in it or it will blow the filter side apart cause its not made to hold any pressure.
