My truck is a 2000 F350 4wd with AT, the CEL would come on, it would lose power and idle very rough. I thought this was a fuel problem and emptied the bowl, it would start up go for a few hundred miles then repeat. I changed the fuel filter but didn't help. This happened at more frequent intervals untill I had to be towed. When idling, I pulled the plug/injector harness and the drivers side was no change but the passenger side killed the engine. I replaced the passenger side harness and gasket but it is still doing the same thing. The crankshaft sensor was replaced (factory recall) about 50,000 miles ago. The truck has 150,000 miles on it. Any thoughts?
FIRST OF ALL...Welcome to FTE! Stick around, you'll learn more than you could possibly believe...I've learned as much or more about my trucks in the last year than I have in the previous 10 years.
It could still be your CPS...50,000 miles is plenty of mileage for it to go out on you again. For $17 you should always have a spare in your truck for you, or to be a "Good Samaritan" to someone else.
also check your ICP sensor. To do so, disconnect your ICP Sensor wiring plug (it's on the driver's side, directly to the right of your fuel bowl if standing in front of your truck). If there is oil coming out of the sensor, then it's bad and needs to be replaced. Replacement is very easy, but the part is about $130 online, or $160 at the stealership.
Also, what is your fuel gauge at when this happens? If it is at or below a 1/4 tank, another possibility is that your fuel pickup foot in the tank may have broken (so you're now sucking air more than fuel, hence the "running rough and losing power, then stalling")...or, the screen is clogged up. Probably will want to do the "in tank" or "Hutch" modification, which requires dropping your tank. It's pretty much a "must do" modification, because the foot either breaks or the screen gets clogged up. If you think this is the issue, the temporary solution is to simply keep your tank above 1/4 tank full at all times.
When it died when you pulled the passenger's side harness, that would have pointed to the driver's side bank being the culprit, not the passenger's side. I would look into that side first.
And X's2 if you haven't done the mods to the intank screens(Hutch Mod)
Thank you both, I will check the ICP sensor. The problem occurs at all fuel levels, but I would like to stay ahead of the game and do the tank mod. What is the "Hutch" modification? Is there anything else that needs addressing when I start on the tank-can I add a spin on filter pre fuel pump?
when mine done that it was the IDM. ohm out the inj. and the glow plugs on the dead bank. if fine ck conections on harness back up to the driver. if all good prob the inj. driver.
