Key & ignition - freeplay

OK, put the key in, turned to the on position. Went to turn it, it broke, and now turns freely. I can pull the key out.

1981 F250 6 cyl. non-tilt

Took the two covers off of the column.
Undid the nut holding the steering wheel on it, can't get the wheel off.

I am now stuck, and unsure what I need to do at this point.

If anyone has step by step instructions, or clear and concise info I'd appreciate it.

Enjoy and have a good one.

Go buy a steering wheel puller. A harmonic balancer puller will usually work also, you might have to buy some bolts to fit the threaded holes in the steering wheel.

Pull the steering wheel off with the puller, and then keep going. Be careful and watch where everything goes, steering columns are a pain to work on.

This is the piece that generally breaks. It's not a whole lot of fun to replace. I did it a few months back.
