I noticed that the paint on rear wheel well on the outside lip is starting to bubble in four spots, the spots are only about the size of a pencil lead. I don't know much about paint or anything like that, so what should I do to take care of this problem?
I'm not a painter but the paint is lifting for some reason, prolly rust. Its gona take you removing the paint from the bad area, getting down to the base metal (maybe some bondo repair???) and repainting. I'm guessing a paint shop would charge few hundred, but thats just a guess.
Same thing on my F250 AND my F350, both sides. It looks really bad. These trucks are notorious for the rust on the inside of the rear wheel wells apparently. Both of my trucks are black, so it's very visible and it drives me nuts!
Since its only the size of a pencil lead I think I'm going to scrape the paint off, put a little touch up paint on it, then a couple coats of clear coat on it. And hope it turns out ok
rust is a very deep thing it comes from the backside so covering it up even after grinding it down to bare metal . if its covered with any thing bondo, paint, ect.. it will come back. the only way to remove it is weld in new metal either patches or panels $$. try some converter to slow it down, touch it up and save some money for later. look at the bottom of your doors to on the backside.
If there's rust on the inside of the wheel wells, the paint will just bubble again, no?
Yes, but on mine there isn't any rust on the inside of the wheel wells. I'm not sure why its bubbling on the outside. I'm not very good at posting pics on here. I can text you a pic of it if anyone wants one.
Shoot! You're really lucky then! Certainly I'm no diesel truck expert (just a big diesel truck lover!), but is it possible the rust is "inside" the metal and just not visible on the inside? (Please don't shoot me if that's a dumb question!). I have noticed that whenever I pull up next to a diesel truck like ours, I look over and sure enough, 99% of them have these same ugly paint bubbles in the same spots!
Wholy mackerel ~ does that mean my assumption was right?? And here I thought I was clueless!!
yes usually when you start to see rust on the outside the inside has lots of damage the cars and trucks of today are alot better than the 50/60/70s but they all will rust at some point.
You're seeing the 1st sign of SD "bed rot" - mine started the same way about a yr ago. Now have several holes above the tire - getting a flatbed to replace the rusted bed for christmas. Thought about another bed but decided to go the alum flatbed route.

Reason: spelling
Now I have more problems! I just got home, had to run to town. Truck was running fine, doing 55-60 mph and a deer jumped out in front of me, had to stand on the brakes, missed the deer. Right after that my service engine light came on, once in a while the truck will jerk, and once it died. No codes on the scan gauge other that P1501 which says VSS out of self test range or something like that.
Anyone with any ideas?
VSS = vehicle speed sensor
Mounted on top of the pumpkin in the rear. Not sure why this would pop up after hard braking. Did the rear axle hop?
Maybe the hard stop jarred loose the sensor or it's harness.
Intermittent stumble can either be CPS related or could be IPR/ICP sensor.
