Kinda , but just for fun I learned some new terminology- I thought they were all just carriages... 'Customers could choose from Studebaker sulkies, broughams, clarences, phaetons, runabouts, victorias, and tandems. For $20,000 there was a four-in-hand for up to a dozen passengers, with red wheels, gold-plated lamps and yellow trim.'

What did one keep in the running board box?
Tools, cuz mechanics were few and far between back then. Motorists were required to make their own repairs. In most areas, the only alternative were blacksmith shops.
John ("Wheelbarrow Johnnie") Studebaker was a CA gold rusher, but mined the miners by making wheelbarrows.
Two other famous peeps who got their start by mining the miners were Levi Strauss (trousers made from sail canvas) and Phillip Armour (butcher shop).
All three set up shop in Placerville (aka Hangtown, aka Dry Diggins) CA. In 1852, Studebaker headed back to South Bend IN with 20 grand, partnered up with his brothers and The Studebaker Wagon Co. was born.
Studebaker made a fortune during the Civil War as the major supplier of horse drawn vehicles for the Union Army.
Even though Studebaker folded the tent in 1966, they are still the 2nd longest manufacturer of wheeled vehicles (1852-1966). Benz is the oldest (1886-2012), Cadillac (1902-2012) is 3rd.
Y'all know...of course...that the original name of The Cadillac Motor Car Co. was...The Ford Motor Co.
Billy Durant was in the carriage business in Flint MI (Durant-Dort Carriage Works), but had the foresight to see that the automobile was the 'next big thing.'
In 1905, Durant bought the ailing Buick Motor Car Co. from David Dunbar Buick's financial backers, as they had just booted Buick out of the company he founded in 1904.
Durant bought the Olds Motor Works from Ransom E. Olds' financial backers in 1908. When he did that, he changed the company name from the Buick Motor Car Company to General Motors.
Durant bought The Cadillac Motor Car Co. in 1909. Cadillac was not in financial trouble, but Durant made Cadillac an offer they couldn't refuse.
That's pretty nice. I'll bet there are some guys who could use parts off of that.
We were out in Darwin back in the spring, but didn't drive around the town. Now I wish I had, and we have a reason to go back. If you get back out that way, take the drive up to Cerro Gordo mine. It is privately owned, but if you catch the caretaker on a good day he will give you a little tour, or so I've heard, he was not in such a mood when we were there. Even if he doesn't, there is plenty to see on the drive.
With mineral prices where they are, they could restart operations there, which would then limit our access to an historic treasure.
I spoke to a local retiree there and asked about active mines. He said the Gov't regulations were too costly to make opening one feasible, so just hobbyists there. This guy opened up the local dance hall and gave us the grand tour - I think he was kinda lonely that day.
I drove a Renault Espace I drove for 3 yrs; it had some electronic quirks for sure. Had plenty of pep for a smoker. US is really missing out on these direct injected small diesel engines with gobs of torque and a super light chassis. Renault Dauphine Ondine 1964 - YouTube
