2008 Explorer Automatic Transmission

How much ATF loss would be needed to cause complete loss of transmission usage for 2008 Explorer? Complete loss being defined as putting into drive while on a very small incline in parking lot and the car rolling backwards, so nothing catching inside converter/tranny. one quart, five quarts, or more? Without dipstick, difficult to get a quick measurement.

Is there any sort of low level shutoff switch that kicks in if the levels get to low?

How long running like that would it take to damage components within tranny? Would damage be noticable immediately or could it just reduce overall life of tranny by certain mileage? Assume both are possible outcomes.

Thanks in advance for comments
