changing engine sizes
The vehicle is an 86 f150 but the question could be about any truck of that vintage or older such as the late 60's of 70' trucks. If I wanted to switch a larger 8 cylander motor to a 300 series 6 cyl. How much of the associated components would be an appropriate fit? For example starter, alternator, distributor, etc. Or would I have to buy most of the components? I'm still undecided if i would go with and older set of points or a pre computer solid state ignition. Thanks

It depends on which V8 your truck originally had. First issue is the bell housing pattern. Any bell housing or auto trans that bolts to a 289/302/351W/351C will bolt to the 300. Anything in the 429/460 family has a different pattern.
Second issue - engine mount perches. The 300 uses unique engine mount perches. I am talking about the metal brackets that are riveted/bolted to the frame that the engine mounts bolt to. You would need to find a set of 300 perches from a donor truck.
Other less significant issues - Radiator: the inlet and outlet locations on the 300 radiator are reversed from the V8 radiators. You would need a 300 radiator, or you would need to do some creative plumbing. Flywheel - the 300 is internally balanced while most of Ford's V8's are externally balanced. Don't swap a 302/351 flywheel onto a 300. For an automatic, you would need the correct 300 kickdown linkage. Clutch linkage may also be different between the V8 and the 300 (not sure about that one).

How would it change for a manual trans
How would it change for the existing truck with the 8cyl and a manual tran. and the 300 series block? What about all the other engine components can I figure that they are compatible? Your knowledge about the subject is really appreciated by us neophytes. Thanks

302 engines and two barrel holly carborators
So the truck I am interested is 86 f150 with a manual trans and 302 engine. So, am still trying to figure out what I can expect form the 302 on the 300?
Further, a mechanic told me recently that I could put a 2 barell holly carbertor on my 1988 jeep grand wagoneer and get about 5 miles to the gallon more efficientcy. Is this true of a1986 f150? Thanks

Very little can be swapped from the 302 onto the 300. Alternator, PS pump, A/C compressor (maybe - if you can get the brackets to mount it on the 300). That's about it.

300 engine parts

I am interested in your 300 parts. What about the block? What condition was it in before you pulled it out. How many miles where on it? If the block has no cracks etc. I might be interested. I don't have the block; it was sold on ebay, but I do have the accessories. I drove it 72 miles the evening before I pulled the motor. It had 162K on the odometer. Buying and selling is forbidden on these boards, soI will email you and we can take negotiations off list.
