backfire from the carb.
i own a 1978 ford f100 2 wheel drive.
i recently got it back on the road, only to find out, 2 of the cylinder (300 straight six) were pretty much shot.
i found a 1976, engine. (as per casting code)
with a t19 tranny.
so i swap last week end.
it has.
new battery, (july)
new starter coil. (last week.)
new starter. (this morning)
new coil. (this afternoon)
the distributor cap / rotor / wire are from july.
new spark plug as of this week end.
it will not start / or when it does start, it's with a screw driver in the carb.
carb is a carter 1 barrel. rebuilt in july
it sometime run, but it is sucking air like the mix is not right.
or i get flame from the carb.
it ran for about 1 minutes once, with the pedal to the floor, like it was not getting enougth fuel. ( i checked from the pump, fuel come out like crazy)
the 1978 has a spacer between the carb and the header with a third hole in the gasket?? i dont know what it is for?
the 1976, had the carb mounted directly to the header.
i tried both carb with or without the spacer.
i did not change the distributor itself.
there is 2 screw on the left side of the carter.
one is for the "leanness" i dont know what it is called. if i turn all the way to the right, should i not just go back 2 turn??????
the other one is RPM?????
shouldi put a spacer or not???
the vaccum advance is plugged directly into the vacuum tree.
What am i missing.

The distributor is off a tooth. Did you have the dist. out???
The fuel mix is too lean. Needle valve stuck closed??? Dirt in valve??? Filter stopped up???
