I have a '78 F100 with a 351W and C6 out of an '85 Econoline Van. I am going to have to rebuild the transmission (will only move in R, no forward gears). I've been reading and researching, but need some input...does the C6 require the transmission cooler box that mounts to the radiator? The truck didn't have one originally (had a 351M and C6, both pulled and replaced with above mentioned), and to the best of my knowledge the I don't remember the van having one either...I'm pretty sure it didn't otherwise I would have swapped it into the truck when I did the swap 2+ years ago...but after reading and researching, I'm seeing a lot of things mentioned about the transmission cooler box, and am curious. The truck is primarily used as a daily driver (30+ miles a day), and on occasion to haul stuff to the scrap yard, pull a 5x8 trailer with mower, etc...Nothing major, nothing consistently...but IF i need one, then I need to find one and get it so I can hook it up when I rebuild the transmission...fix it right so I won't have to fix it again...Currently the transmission lines hook into the bottom of the radiator...
Are you asking if you need to add an additional cooler in addition to the factory cooler that is built-in to the radiator? If so, it is not required, but any extra cooling you can provide the transmission is a good thing.
If your radiator has the hook-ups for an auto and it is in good working order, then you don't need the aux. cooler. However, heat is the number one killer of auto. trans, and putting the extra cooler inline will definately increase the life of the transmission. It is one of those things that can only help you, there's no harm in having extra cooling.
