OK so a little history, i just changed my FICM, ICP, entire fuel system (put in an airdog) and both batteries because my truck was running and starting like crap. It starts and runs a little better now but I checked the charging system on in a week ago and noticed my alternator was only puttin out 11.5 volts, the light would blink every now and then, the alternator was about a year old and has lifetime warranty, I took it and had it exchanged, it lasted a day charging at high 13's low 14's, so I put a new one in, that one last about 2 days, put a new one in that one lasted about 3 hours, put a new one in and it lasted 3 days and started to smell like a motor burning up and wasnt charging, soooooo I just changed it out half hr ago and guess what, smelt like an electrical fire again and wont charge, am I just that unlucky or is there another issue that im missing? Ive tested the voltage at the batteries, the alternator itself, and in the cab from the SCT, thanks alot for any help im losing my mind here!!!!
I had the same problem in the past three years. Granted they didn't go out that soon but I did go through 5 alternators in three years. Stay away from the motocraft ones they aren't any better than Advance Auto's lifetime replacement. I Finally added a high amperage unit from DB electric. I used a 200 amp unit for about $250.00. You might also have a bad harness connector on the back of the alternator if your burning them up that fast.

i would definatly check for a short in the main cable to the battery - could be chafing somewhere. check continuity to ground, also check the connector on the back of the alternator. no way you should be burning up that many units
That is Extremly FAST Rate you are going thru alternators
I know when I was having issues the alternator would get hot it started melting the connection to the B+ wire at the back of the alternator so I cleaned ALL the connections at the batterys and get the two main grounds to one by the A/C pump on engine block and one by the Power steering pump on the Frame after that the light shut off for a week then it came back on
So then I replaced the Alternator to a 190 amp from DC Power with the wire UPgrade check it out
I could see it was built a TON Better than OEM the guts and even had a smaller pulley on it
It was alittle spendy at 370.00 with the wire upgrade IIRC but they have a Great reputation and NO Problems yet
