hey all I have a 1972 ford f 250.i installed a larger set of tires on it(LT 285-75-R16) .but the passenger side tire is rubbing even after i put some taller springs. what can cause that. the driver side has stock springs but it is not rubbing. the tire only rubs when i turn.it is not rubbing on the top of the tire only the front lower edge of the fender.any and all help will be appreciated. thank you .
I had the same problem on my 1972 f100 4x4 when I put 33's on it. It is stock with no suspension mods. When I got my tape measure out and checked some dimensions. The passenger side wheel well opening was smaller. I think at some point a prior owner hit some thing in the front right hard enough to bend the sheet metal somewhat but do very little damage. My fender looks undamaged and doesn't have any filler on it (easy to tell - look at the back of the fender for dents or use a weak strength magnet on the front). I put on some gloves and pulled forward (towards the front of truck) on the fender well opening until it opened up a bit. No problem now but my truck isn't a show truck or anything so I didn't care about yanking on the fender. That was my problem - I would measure yours before you do anything. Good luck.
my 71 f100 4x4 stock height with 33's rubs on the front right too... never thought about checking the wheel well opening, but it rubbed enough to tear my trim up! I'll have to check it out next time i'm workin on it.
matts72ford, if you truck is 2wd you might check radius arm bushings if you haven't already. my tire used to REALLY rub before i replaced mine, now it only kinda rubs
Is the right side axle farther forward than the left? Curious as all of you have I Beam IFS's. Perhaps a tape from the front of the rail to the centerline of the axle would help. Both sides to see if they match. Another point would be the bushings in the eye of the beams. If they are shot the beam can move around.
If your still lookin for a fix, I work at a tire shop and one owner of a truck had this happen to him and he resorted to trimming the ***** with a knife.

That's pretty close to the stock tire size for an F250...I run the same size on my 69 F250 and have plenty of clearance all around. Are your wheels/rims stock? Shocks good? I'd crawl under there and start measuring with a tape, as mentioned, and compare one side to the other.

Stock size would have been around a 7.50-16. Those are about 31 inches tall and much narrower than a 285/75R-16 at 32.5 inches. Some may have been equipped with the 9.50-16.5. Not saying the 285 will not work in the right conditions, its just larger than O.E. LT235/85R16 is the modern equivalent to the standard 7.50-16.
