shopping

So, I'm shopping for an Excursion and want input from the experts. Are there particular years, engines, builds that have issues I should watch out for? Are there configurations that are particularly good (objectively)?

I'm leaning toward an '04/'05 diesel, 4X4. Would prefer 8 passenger w/ leather (but the leather I've seen all have 7 pass).

Two particular questions:

1. Any stability issues with lifted Excursions? I wouldn't mind 4" or so of lift, but need to make sure I'm not compromising safety for the kids.

2. Any conversion kits for 3-point belts in the middle seats?

Thanks for putting up with the newbie.

6.0 diesel issues?

So, I've heard that the 6.0 diesel has had some issues. Does this mean I should be looking only at the 7.3L pre-2004?

The 6.0L PowerStroke Turbo Diesel can make the most power and get the best fuel mileage but there are some specific issues that can address the "internet furor" about it's poor reliability.

Check out: POWERSTROKEHELP.COM - The Information Source for Ford Power Stroke Diesel Owners & Mechanics and Home of EDAS® "Engine Damage Avoidance System" for Powerstroke Diesel Trucks

Lots of good information there. I have an '04 Limited 4x4 6.0L Powerstroke and I've seen as good as 21.1 mpg out of it. With a 44 gal. tank that's a pretty good range.

The 4x4 is already pretty "lifted" but to each his own. Mine came with 33x17" wheels/tires and I'm going to downgrade them the next time I need tires back to a 265/70/17 to get it back to the correct rev. range for the engine/tranny/diff ratio.

Good luck in your search!
