Got back from a 15 minute drive, running an errand. Put the truck in the garage and something in the back passenger side smelled like it was cooking pretty good... like hot metal. Only thing I could figure is it was a hung up caliper. Any way to tell? Truck drove fine, and brakes felt normal.
Problem cleared itself. Just took it to the dealer and nothing, of course. I never use the emergency brake... Wondering if that hill holder feature may have something to do with it... But, its fine now, and the dealer is going to run my VIN to see if there are any TSBs for it. Just have to keep checking it.
Great question. I'm not sure... it didn't tell me if it was. I was doing local driving at the time... no highway stuff that would trigger it. Man... that would be great if thats what it is... I'm nervous now about the caliper on that side.
If you think the caliper is seized, after the next time you drive it go around and touch all the rotors. The siezed one will be very hot compared to the others.
But you will not be able to tell b/c your fingers will be burned and you will not have any fingerprints except where they melted to that first rotor you touched. Ask me how I know. I think i would touch the hub/wheel or something.
Had to poke fun at myself Ian. I did that once by accident when I lost my balance working on one of these. Grabbed the rotor right after driving it to keep from falling while changing a tire. Burned the prints to the rotor. Took days to feel anything in that hand again.

Haha, yeah that wouldn't be fun at all. I just burned my hand on a 450 degree pizza stone last night so that feeling is pretty fresh in my mind.
I meant to just stick your finger in through the wheel and poke it for a second or less. I've done it a couple of times without managing to harm myself.

Highway driving isn't necessarily what triggers regens. I've had the "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" message driving in town at 35-45 MPH. And when it begins, the message only shows up for a few seconds so it's easy to miss.
