My buddy owns a 99.5 7.3 and is thinking about putting on a van turbo that has a wicked wheel already installed on it, it's a fresh rebuilt turbo, we've read that it's a great upgrade etc but he's hesitant about it because of the non wastegate on it. It's his daily driver and just wants to know if not having a wastegate on it will take any driveability away and potentially mess the truck up anyone have experience with this??
Does he have any sort of chip? Without a chip of some sort, the stock fueling won't light the van turbo. It will give new meaning to turbo lag. With some sort of tunes, it will run great. Much stronger on the top end. No issues with the lack of wastegate. I promise.
Ditch the WW with the van turbo. The WW cures surge by flowing less air having the 1.15 exhaust housing should cure the surge with a stock wheel flowing more air. He will have no issues with getting rid of the WG. After I put my turbo on I had my DP set on the 80economy and I couldnt stop braking the tires loose (I got done with the install just after it rained and the roads were wet) so I got up to 60mph and floored it thinking theres no way Ill brake the tires loose going that fast..... I was wrong a puff of black smoke and I was sideways driving down my road. I thought my wife was gonna poop herself lol. I had a boost leak and was only able to make 15psi boost but I found it and fixed it and was able to make 27psi after the fact. If its straight piped the sound of the turbo dumping boost threw the exhause is awesome too itll have a zing sound to it unlike with the WG in place. May as well tell him to upgrade the uppipe gaskets or put bellowed pipes on it while hes there
yea he has intake, ts6 position chip, straight exhaust, iah delete overboost code eliminator, hpx line and pillar gauges i think thats all his mods. And we read that even the van turbo will surge is this not true? Soon as he gets a new turbo he's gonna get the tony wildman tuning for the truck and probably a 4" exhaust.
Ive had no surge problems. The 1.15 housing gets rid of the surge. If he for some reason does have surge after that get the ATS 4'' intake housing to cure it I dont recommend the WW unless your broke and are having major issues with your truck, if your gonna fix the problem fix it the right way the first time

Thanks man I'll pass it onto him appreciate it and so will he

The van turbo doesnt work with the Sd style ebpv. You can just remove the shaft and tap the hole and plug it. Super easy to do. If you want a blank pedestal get ahold of clay at riffraff. He sells them.

X2 For $118 I would save your money and just tap it out thats what I did thats $118 vs $3 if you already have the tap. I can promise you he wont regret it
