I was taking a buddy of mine to a local bodyshop to pick his car up
and a rollback was offloading a (late model) Supercrew that had been rear ended.
The drivers side taillight lense was gone, and the rear quarter
was deformed by the bumper folding up into it.
I could have sworn that the (quarter panel) was fiberglass.
It looked just like it... the way it was splintered and fractured.
Are these parts of the truck made from fiberglas or steel?
What (if any other parts (on my 2003 SC) would be made from fiberglass?
.... Is the hood of my truck made from aluminum?.... what about the tailgate?
I've made a habit of liberally coating all my vehicles' undersides with WD-40... especially lapped steel joints, cab mounts, bolts, and other various underpinnings...I won't waste it if its never going to rust anyway..
Could the truck he saw have been a Lincoln Blackwood? They look like a Supercrew. The box on them is fiberglass.
Your hood is aluminum but the rest of the body should be steel as far as I know.
I believe the outer panels on the Supercrew boxes are fiberglass. The inner box is of course steel, but I think you'll find the outer skin is of fiberglass.
Well actually, I just had a line-x liner sprayed in my truck and the guy doing it put some plastic over the bed to help dry it out, (it was raining), with a heater blowing in it. He tried to put a magnet over the plastic to hold it in place and guess what? It didn't stick! I guess now that I remember that, the outer skin must be fiberglass. I know that the flaresides are also fiberglass, so it doesn't surprise me that the 5.5 ft beds on the screw are also.
I cant believe it, The gosh darn bed is fiber glass, how can they make a truck bed out of friggin fiberglass. I went out to my truck, and sure enough, its fiberglass. The dealer didnt tell me this, and it wasn't in the product literature....I cant imagine fiberglass will hold up over time like a metal bed would, or am i wrong,,,,just when i was starting to get my faith in American auto's back,,,,uuhgg.
I personally like fiberglass body panels like I have on my race car.
Yes they crack when something hits them.....of course I would never hit anything
They dont dent and stretch and warp the whole panel.
If they crack or get broken they are very easy to fix.
And they wont ever rust
It's all in the name of trying to meet the air quality control laws. As trucks are becoming more of a family car than a family car is they're gonna start cracking down harder on trucks. I'm glad my 2000 F-150 is metal.
...just like the step side box, these box sides are fiberglass or some kind of composite-the curvy surface probably is too hard to amke from steel or tooling was too much money foe a couolke model years until the '04 debuts. The inside is all steel, where it counts. I think it's gret that the box sides won't rot out.
Like GT350 said, the indside of the box is made of good ole american steel. It's just the outside that is fiberglass. Ford tr man - The magent will stick to the inside of the bed, just not the outside. The cab and all of its parts are steel also, so the magnet will stick to those as well. I personally like the fiberglass outer skin as it won't rust. You would be amazed how strong those panels are being made of fiberglass.
