does it fully engage in those gears? i.e. does the shifter fall into where it should when you put it in those gears?

sounds like ya need to tear it down and see whats happening in there. seems like a shaft is broken. . .normally when teeth chunk, the truck will still drive in those gears but it will sound and feel horrible.

My guess would be broken/loose shift fork, maybe worn shifter.
Probably need to lift the top off of the trans to check.
Hopefully other opinions will follow.

yea could very well be the fork is broken or falling apart. best to pop the top on the trans like he said and take a gander.

alrite i pulled it apart and the forks areant worn or broken. if i put the tranny in nuetral and the shifter in nuetral and bolt it back together and shift it into 3rd gear and unbolt it and lift it off and the fork is moved but the tranny piece didnt move. i can take the cover off and physically put it in the gears. so wth is wrong

The shift forks are fixed to the shift rails with pins. Check that none of the pins have fallen out or sheared.

If the shift fork moves, but the shift collar does not, than the shift fork is either not aligned properly, or it is broken. It's probably cracked, and just pops out over the collar. It could also just be very worn down.

The fork is worn. Get a new fork and you will see the difference.
