I am not real familiar with the Mazda trans, so they may not have them. But yes, they just push on

Shift fork (lower one in picture) looks severely worn down however can't tell if its just cause/effect of camera angle.

Is it kinda hard to get the cover off and back on again? Clover lifts up slightly and is free but then need overcome shift fork clamp force/action to lift it clear of the case?
Seams to me it be little tough as forks are both "offset" from one another slightly to the point cover doesn't just cleanly lift off / drop on?

ya i lift it up and then it kinda catches then lifts off. i did several measurements for depth on the case and then into the tranny and the forks sit down in the grooves tight

You stated the shifter moves the rail and shift fork with the cover off like it should, you know none of the roll pins are sheared.

You put everything in neutral (trany and shifter both) you put the cover on. You move the shifter then you remove the cover (without moving the shifter), you find the fork did move but its corresponding sliding sleeve has not moved with it correct?

Not sure at this point, bad bearing allowing shaft to move down and away perhaps. Doubt it was just a thought, take a suitable drift, pry some try moving things around as in will the shaft move off center line?

I think I'd fill the fork slot in those sliding sleeves with axle grease so its full even with the top (not all way around just top half or little better should do it), both of them to be thorough and then put cover on and bolt it down (maybe not all the bolts just enough make sure it down flush/tight) I wouldn't move the shifter.

Then I'd remove the cover see how much grease was displaced by the forks in each of those sliders, how deep did each fork sit down into each slider.

Then go from there depend on what that told me, might not show anything but on the other hand?

The lower fork in the picture is wiped out. Obviously the 3-4 fork. I would suggest E-bay or Southern Gear.

3-4 shift fork looks worn out. This is not an uncommon issue. It would be simple to swap another shift tower on there to verify, but I'm almost certain from the picture. In the several M5R2's I've worked on, they haven't had plastic inserts

my old truck only had 1st 2nd R and 5th. driving it home was interesting when u bought it but what was happening with mine anyways was i was able to rotate the shifter so it was hard to find gears to begin with and the 3-4 shifter rail kept falling out of the hole in the end and getting stuck. there are caps on the end of the housing at each shifter rail and one popped out allowing the rail to move farther then it should have.

dont think that helped at all but just a thought.

like i said its just the view of the 3-4 fork that makes it look worn. it measures the same as a new one. a tranny shop found the problem. it was in the top of the cover. it was always kinda loose and they put new internals in there and it works great now. but thanks for all the ideas
