I picked up a set of first gen lightning wheels for my 78. They are in great shape but the paint has flaked off. What is the best way to paint them. What paint should i use. Or, should i just take them to get powdercaoted. I really dont want to pay alot to get them done, but also dont want to mess them up just to save some money. What are yalls thoughts? thank you
strip the old paint with aircraft paint stripper...scuff up the wheels with some sand paper id spray a coat of etch primer down to give it a little extra tooth to bite into...POR15 sells hardnose enamels for places that will see abuse like wheels etc...what color do you want them?
Depends what quality you're looking for... it can range from single-stage urethane, to basecoat/clear coat, to Rustoleum appliance paint (it's epoxy from a can!), to Rustoleum hammerite finish (enamel from a can). The latter two is about as low-buck as you can get.
2x with the previous post - preparation is key to a decent finish and even moreso with a professional finish.
thanks for the quick replys. i want them silver again. as close as i can to stock, or if its a little more silver its fine. i agree though, prep is key. I will get it going and let yall know how it comes out. the wheels look good on the truck its a 78 flareside.
I have a set I wanna paint too. My concern has been the plastic caps. I was wanting to paint mine a silver to match what's going on the truck. Don't know how to make that last.
I would polish them out to make them shinny. I miss my lightning, bought a 93 when they first came out, after 15 years and almost 60K miles it was time for someone else to enjoy it.
