The gauge is a "dummy".. It does not provide true readings. There is a good chance you have a bad battery, and your alternator is keeping everything running.
The altenator finally quit. I was about 30 miles from home at night when it quit working. First the ABS, Airbag and seatbealt warning lights came on and the overdrive light started flashing. Then the headlights became dim. Then the whole instrument cluster went dead. Next the interior lights refused to come on and the shifting became hard and quick. The blinkers quit working, but the headlights and taillights stayed until the end. That came about 4 miles from my house. The seatbealt warning light came on and about 30 seconds later complete shutdown. The truck tried to protect itself unit the end. You really don't think about how much of the newer vehicles use electronics.
