Trying to make my 6.0 PSD reliable..did I do it correctly?
I have an 04 6.0 PSD. I bought the truck with 140,000 miles and 2 weeks later it threw a check engine light. turned out to be the HGs. So replaced the gaskets, put on 2 new factory heads (originals warped to far to be worth putting back in), ARP head studs and went with the BulletProof EGR cooler. I rebuilt the oil cooler looked to be in good working shape after I cleaned all the soot out of it. Ran all new coolant lines and hoses and replaced all 8 injectors. throttle body, turbo, pistons ect. were all in good shape. (I think i caught the problem before it got too hot). Now ive been told I need to run a coolant filtration system? Which one do you guys recommend? and can I do it myself?

Wow I think that you have pretty much covered everything. The coolant filter kits out there run around 120 bucks. You can easily put one on your self if your a little inventive you can buy all the parts to make one yourself for aroun 80 bucks and its fun too. I just looked at the instalation instructions for a kit and bought the needed parts from a KW dealer.

What coolant are you using?
Is your ICP sensor located behind the turbo or on the passenger valve cover (04's could be either location)?
IMO - any reliability plan should include sending the FICM to FICMrepair.com to have some components upgraded.
Also, make sure your batteries and alternator are healthy!

Welcome to FTE and the 6.0L forum. From the sounds of it, you've got most of the issues covered. The only thing I'd keep an eye on is your batteries if they're more than 3 years old. Low voltage will toast the FICM. This the coolant filter I've been running on my truck for the last two years:

Or as steven06 suggested, you can build your own from parts at you local auto parts store & hardware store.John, you have some of the strangest avatars.

Impending doom?
Hey guys I'm back, after almost 2 years running on the truck after all the repairs I'm having some more issues. Im throwing the infamous P0401 code, or egr flow restriction. Tried doing my research on the forums to see if I could pinpoint it before I started asking questions but came up short. So I have the BP EGR cooler. Ive read that it could be a plethora of issues, but none of them seem to line up. I just replaced the turbo about 6 months ago, I can't see the BP egr cooler having failed. my mechanic took apart the egr valve and said that it had a lot of carbon buildup, so he cleaned it and oiled it, cleared the code and within 3 days and about 100 miles of driving P0401 again. Any Ideas?

I'm at 145,000 miles. It's risky business if your looking into a 6.0 that has had no work done, in terms of fixing the underlying issues, not just dealership warranty parts replacement. If you want to dive into the 6.0L just be sure to do your homework and know what to expect before spending the $. They can be very tempting with their great prices on Craig's and even at the dealership. Just my 2 cents.

Don't get depressed brother. I have only put 30,000miles on mine since I bought it back in 2010, and have spent right at $6,000.00 in parts and labor and maintenance. Which figures out to 20 cents a mile. But look on the bright side, the more miles you put on it, now that its dependable, the lower your cost per mile will be. Just tryin to help.

Are your guys prices paying a shop or dealership, or DIY work? My thought is that most of the extremely high amounts of money that is spent on these trucks goes to pay for labor, not having to pay for the cost of the labor I would assume would drop the cost significantly?
Anyone have breakdowns of parts cost vs. labor cost per mile roughly?

Works out to 14 cents a mile for parts...
And 6 cents a mile for labor...
