No crank, no start

No crank, no start
I'm not sure how much background is necessary, so let me start with the basics. Car is a 98 Navigator, and it ran fine on Saturday (Snowtober 30), but A4WD, 4HI and 4LO ranges would not engage front axle. I 'slithered' back into the driveway and parked. Sunday, I removed battery cable to reset the computer, this worked before to bring back the 4WD. When I re-connected the battery, the engine tried to crank, but batt. was dead. I applied the charger and left it. Several hours later, tried to start again, and got a loud resounding click at the firewall, but no crank. I tried pulling the battery cable again, no change. Tried another key (we have 3), no change. The gauges/lights all stay brightly lit when the key is turned. What can be the issue? I searched the forum for "No crank" but didn't find anything like this issue. Thanks!

Sounds like the starter solenoid switch is clicking. Look for one of these Amazon.com: Motorcraft SW1951C New Solenoid: Automotive in the engine compartment, have someone turn the key and see if that is where the loud click is. If it clicks, it should be OK. Someone else may be able to tell you how to test it. It could be your starter. You can remove it and have it tested at an auto parts store.
