Idea was to be a little different, and cheap as possible. Wanted black wheels and hubcaps. Originally the truck had silver wheels and rusty steel hubcaps, the ones that are flat and say "Ford Motor Company" in a circle. A little Krylon and $20 at the salvage yard for hubcaps, I think it turned out OK. You should have seen the look on the guys face at the junkyard, he said hubcaps are almost extinct. One bit of bad news, the truck that had my F O R D on the hood that I need got crushed before I could nab the letters.
Looks good. I had all four of mine on my truck and I just tossed them. They are getting more rare though. I always thought it was funny that the steel wheels actually came white.
Responding to you statement about steel wheels being white... my understanding is that trucks which came with the smaller "dog dish" hub caps had white wheels and the ones with full sized hub caps were painted black, so the small amount of wheel which was not covered by the full hub cap did not "stand out" against the tire.
Regarding the rarity of factory hub caps... I found a junk yard which was once a small town Ford Dealership. It was run by the "older" sons of the man who owned the dealership back in the '50s, '60s and '70s. In an old cube style van, I found many NOS dog dish hub caps from the late 50's and early 60's. According to the sons, the vehicles were delivered with hub caps inside [not yet mounted] and their father would take them and put them on a shelf so he could install the larger hub caps and pad the profit, so to say.
