Which tuner is recommended? I'm way past warranty, and just did the head gaskets and studs and an EGR delete. So I'm ready for a little juice.
Look into FICM tuning from powerhungryperformance.com. It helps immensly with throttle response AND fuel mileage and is WAY safe for even a stock motor.
The turbo lag is something you have to get used to. Most importantly, don't push too much throttle. If you do, the PCM ignores the throttle position input, and uses its own slow-assed acceleration algorithym, to prevent smoke and excessive emissions. The trick is to give it all the throttle it can use, but no more, until the boost spins up.
The folks with manual transmissions have a steeper learning curve on that.
Amen brother! I remember the first time I stabbed my go pedal in traffic and expected the truck to jump and instead it shuffled off like an old lady was driving! After paying attention and practicing some, I got the hang of it. Of course you can stand on the brakes and do a boosted launch (I'm too old for that ) or put some tunes in it. Either way it does take a little finesse to make a quick start and it's gonna pull harder as the Rev's come up.
Interesting. I had a 2wd 7.3 (a 2000 F350 extended cab) before (which is why I traded it in). I would assume 3.43:1 or something close (I never checked). I'm betting the 6.0 has 3.73:1 or possibly 4.10:1 since it's 4wd and has a gooseneck hitch (which looks very factory, but may be aftermarket).
Off the top of my head the only ratios you could get behind the 6.0L was 3.73, 4.10 & 4.30. Pretty sure the 4.30 was limited to the F350 only. I've got a 3.73LS in mine and it gets around pretty dang good in snow, slush & ice for a 2WD. There have been times I wished there was a 3.55 back there, but drop a trailer on the hitch and watch her run down the highway...I'm more than happy to keep the 3.73.

Yip, that could be something worth looking into. I seem to remember someone making the comment that the OEM boost gauge is pretty actuate. I'm running an Isspro plumbed into the intake elbow. So I don't know if that's a fair comparative between the two set-ups.

Exactly You need the pressure, not volume in the exhaust to build boost with the turbo.
