I found a 1997 f350 reg cab 7.3 diesel 4x4 auto. It is a one owner truck 75000 miles blue xlt. Dealer maintained no hitch in bed. It is clean and nice all around but I was wondering what a truck like this would be worth ball park. It is better than average condition. I prefer a 5 spd truck but the autos are good this is a all stock truck, no upgrades from oem. if anyone knows what it might be worth, they'll be here.
I hopr to buy it for 10 but asking 12500. Why do you say the auto is the weak link? Just wondering my brother has a 96 and a 99 with close to 200k miles on both and his autos feel strong to me. Are the autos prone to troubles or something? Thanks for the info.
Yeah I get your drift the 96 of my brothers had 20k fluid changes, this one Im looking at has never had a tranny service according to the owner. A little scary to me but it will get one right away. I hope it will last a while but I do see your point. I think it might be salvaged at this point but heavy use in a big truck requires regular service and i think that the lack of maintenance is the reason for most automatic transmission failures
---- " THERES OIL IN WHERE?! I JUST DID THE ENGINE AND AIR FILTER LAST WEEK, WHAT DO YOU MEAN I SHOULDVE CHANGED THE OIL MORE OFTEN?"
I think what Mike was trying to say was that out of an etremely stout truck, the transmission is the one thing that tends to be the major part of the driveline that fails. This could be for many different reasons, but with regular maintenance and a few upgrades should last a long time. Here is an interesting thread about E4OD life spans
If you run it ***** to the wall all the time like I did my 94 it won't last long. I effectively cooked a HD rebuild in about 20000 behind a turbo IDI. It would run with a chipped stroke until the tranny started acting up. But it had no easy life. Multiple launches, Off Road alot, playing in the snow, Mud sling, and some other misc burnouts and such. Probably not the best tranny for my first 4x4 but oh well. Live and learn.
Id say under normal sain driver condition anther 100000 should be no problem. The original tranny in the 94 supposedly made it to 215000 when it was rebuilt right before I got it.
With what they were built for not many reach 200K. But most were not prepared for the duty right. Most were constructed using a F150 transmission and no upgrades. Poor excuse for a cooler. No Temperature indication. No smarts in the pcm to place in limp mode before it hits 270 on the DTC setting. Weak components, from the TC to the planitaries and clutch. So in short could they have been serviced more to make em last longer with the org. designs-- maybe. But not at the duty the engine was designed for. The 5spd beat it plan an simple. Been there done that.
And all of that started early
