I did my 85 head a while back, new valves and guides. The head was milled, don't remember how much but I don't think it was much. I also ditched the TFI for Duraspark with vacumn advance and replaced the carb with a FT1022C. The truck runs great !
I do have this PING problem though. The starnge thing is the old timing mark on the left side doesn't seem usable any more. Is that possible ? I haven't tried the others yet(left side, Bottom???). But; Why would the timing change ?
Is the vacuum advance conected to manifold or ported vacuum?
If you started with 8.5:1 compression and milled 0.030 from the head, which is a bunch, it would raise the compression to about 8.9:1, which should still run on 87 octane easily.
If the vacuum increases with rpm it is ported vacuum. It actually increases with airflow, so you will get full advance pretty much anytime the throttle is open 1/2 or more and the engine isn't lugged down. You might try it on a manifold source just to see what happens. What is the base timing set at? I would start around 12 degrees. When you did the head are you sure you got the EGR system put back together correctly?
I had it on manifold vacuum by accident until reading about verifying the carb tube to be ported. Got that corrected.
The EGR is really disconnected, I just left the intake / exhaust / EGR plumbing all tied together when the head was done. I suppose there could be a leak someplace.
Timing is a problem. With the old TFI, I used the mark on the left of the timing cover. Ever since I replaced it with the Duraspark II Distrib, I can’t get a good flash on the left side mark. I don’t understand how this can be if the motor is running fine ? Possibly this is related to my problem.
This has got to be something simple I’m overlooking. Somebody out there has the answer. Come on now gurus, Think….Think…. Think…..
Even if you can't find the timing mark, i make a small scratch in the distributer where it meets the block, and a scratch at the same spot on the block. Then just turn the distributer back a bit, and see if it cures the problem. If not, then just turn back to realign the scratches.
