What type of vehicle are you driving? That would be quite a helpful hint to start as off with!
But yeah, Until we know what your driving we cant give you a positive answer because a Ranger would have less wheel clearence than something else, Ranger is all I can think that would have that type of gear ratio. But yeah, provide us with some more info on your vehicle.
On the back you could fit a 33-35" tire, and on the front you could go to a 31" or maybe even a 32" tire. Just make sure your wheel aren't any bigger than 15x8, or your front wheels may rub the fender with a 32" tire. You can obviously go with wider wheels on the back if you like. I used to have a 95 2wd F-150 with 15x12 wheels and 33x12.5R15 tires on the back, adn 15x8 31.10.5R15 on the front. I find it odd you have such crummy gears, cuz my F-150 had 3:55's stock. IT was a plain XL truck with a 5.0/5spd, only option it had was A/C.

Good point especialy since I dont think they make a 2.73 gear, only a 2.75
Nope. 96s use the 8.8 axle which has 2.73 gears not the 2.75s used in the older 9". both 2.73 and 3.73 gears were available in the F-150 but in a 2WD I don't think the 3.73s were an option.
With a 2.73 ratio, you need the shortest tire you can possibly get by with, probably around 27" with 3.73s I'd guess you'd want something in the 30-31" range. We really need to know what engine and what tranny to answer correctly since automatics and manuals have different OD ratios and the 8s have different torque peaks from the 6. It might help if you told us whether you were going to tow and how much, etc., etc., etc.
